Facts About Leopard Geckos You Should Know
The Leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius), genus: Leopardgeckoartige (Eublepharis), belongs to the real Lidgecko a subfamily of the Lidgeckos.
There are currently six subspecies of Eublepharis macularius (Eublepharis macularius macularius, Eublepharis macularius afghanicus, Eublepharis macularius fasciolatus, Eublepharis macularius fuscus, Eublepharis macularius montanus, Eublepharis macularius smithi).
Habitat
The range of distribution of Eublepharis macularius and its subspecies is in Afghanistan, Pakistan and NW-India. In the inhabited areas there is a dry climate. This should also be noted at the terrarium facility.Attitude
The substrate used is dry substrate such as sand. It is best to use beach sand, as the grains are beautifully sanded off the sea and thus do not pose a risk of injury to the geckos. Also loam is a suitable substrate that comes very close to the natural conditions.Although leopard geckos are ground dwellers, they should be offered some climbing opportunities that are usually welcomed. So the back wall should not be smooth, but be covered with cork. Since cork boards in the trade are usually very expensive, you can also design a back wall yourself and adjust to the wishes of his animals.
It is recommended to install smaller or larger platforms in the back wall and in the final installed state to direct a spotlight on the same, so that the geckos can sunbathe under them.
Terrarium
The terrarium is illuminated with halogen lamps, fluorescent tubes or normal 40W spotlights. There should be at least one hideout per animal on the ground. We use tree barks, stones and the like. It should be ensured that all hiding places are removable, to clean them, or to get to the animals.
Even though leopard geckos are a very robust gecko species, and do not blame them for any removal, unnecessary handling or removal of the animals or the facility should be avoided, as the animals may find this stressful. Also, you should leave them their environment and the equipment does not change constantly, because the leopard geckos have their own territory, which they define by a common rock in the terrarium.
This is just a glimpse into the attitude of leopard geckos, but is inadequate for people who have not dealt with leopard geckos at all!
Since there are many good books about leopard gecko husbandry, we refrain from going into this topic at this point.
